Split Rock II

Boonton is a town that is trying. It has something of a main street, it has one block's worth of "the hood", it has an observatory, it has some memories. It also has a road that will lead you to Split Rock. Depending on the path you choose, you could end up in populated neighborhoods, or you might find the road vanishing beneath you changing to rubble. This is Split Rock Road, this is the infamous single lane road that stretched to Hibernia. This is the road that had damaged the vehicles of those chased off by the crazed man with the shotgun. This is the road that crossed the bridge that death clung to.

Tales lined up to be dispensed and depending on who was doing the telling the hue could move from the diaphanous to the opaque to some shiftless indescribability. The mafia disposed of bodies up here, occultists practiced diabolical things, communities of inbred albinos lived in ramshackle huts half buried in the earth. When you cross the bridge gangs would block you in and do unspeakable things to you. Suicides would jump from the bridge, people would dive off the other side and be sucked away. There have been hauntings and odd UFO type sightings. Someone I know came across the bloated carcass of a goat floating in the reservoir, there was no head.

I don't know why the road was never paved. Or why it was the only one not paved. But many were the times that the underbelly of my car suffered from my slithering curiosity seeking. Once, we stopped and left the road. There were stories of large furnace like chimneys off to the side of the road and we found them. I hadn't known at the time that there was some legend about bones being scattered about here, but there had been animal remains lying about. Further explorations had been curtailed by the long arm.

How much is true? How much was dipped in the fantastic? These memories live in a burlap sack somewhere else, as they don't seem to have a place in my reality anymore. And I miss them.
